Goal-Based Planning: Connecting Money to Milestones

It's easy to invest without a clear destination in mind. Goal-based planning flips that: instead of asking "how do I grow my money," it asks "what am I growing this money for, and by when?"

A child's education in 15 years, a home down payment in 5, retirement in 25 — each of these has a different time horizon and a different tolerance for short-term volatility. Treating them as one undifferentiated pool of "savings" makes it harder to choose appropriate investments for each.

Once a goal is defined with an amount and a timeline, the required monthly or lumpsum investment can be estimated, and suitable instruments chosen for that specific horizon. This also makes progress easier to track — you're measuring against a concrete milestone, not a vague sense of "doing okay."

The result is a plan that's easier to stick with, because every contribution is clearly connected to something you're working toward.
